EYFS to KS1 Transition Community

Formerly known as the Julie Fisher community, this group supports schools interested in embedding the work of Prof Julie Fisher in their school including supporting better transition from Early Years to Primary.

Welcome to our community

Sarah Soyler has been the Headteacher at Woodgrange Infant school since 2009. The school embarked on a journey towards playful pedagogy in 2017 after hearing an inspirational talk by Professor Julie Fisher. We found this helped increasing numbers of children with SEND thrive and succeed. The play approach has now been adopted across KS1. We have also hosted many visits and contributed to several conferences on play and engaged with “Teachers Talking Teaching”, a UEL project which explores what kind of place our school is and how it evolved this way.

Who is this suitable for?

• Head Teachers, Senior Leaders, Reception and KS1 teachers in schools

How does it work?

This group aims to mutually support schools interested in embedding the work of Prof Julie Fisher in their school focussed on supporting better transition from Early Years to KS1.

What does it involve?

Members of this group will be able to join three meetings, one per term.

Visits to other settings to share effective practice.

We aim to organise a conference in the summer with participants running workshops to celebrate and share practice and support everyone’s onward journey

Members of this community can access a range of materials to support this group, including access to training videos, articles and other resources 

Meeting dates

The meeting dates for 2026-27 are:

• Autumn Term – Tue 22 Sep 2026, 16.00 - 17:00 Online introduction

• Spring Term – Tue 02 Mar 2027, 15.00 - 17:00, Woodgrange Infant

• Summer Term Conference – date and venue TBC

This group is free for member schools and is only available to members of Newham Learning.
